Iranian Foreign Minister Meets with Ugandan Foreign Minister on the Sidelines of the 19th NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Meeting
On the second day of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) ministerial summit in Kampala, Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a bilateral meeting with his Ugandan counterpart, General Abubaker Jeje Odongo, to discuss the expansion of diplomatic and economic ties. During the meeting, Dr. Araghchi commended the Republic of Uganda for its successful chairmanship and effective organization of the NAM Coordination Bureau. He lauded Uganda’s active contribution to advancing the movement’s agenda, emphasizing that NAM plays an essential role in upholding international law, defending the sovereign right of nations to self-determination, and protecting the core principles of the UN Charter against unilateralism. Highlighting the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strategic resolve to strengthen relations with African countries, Dr. Araghchi expressed Tehran’s full readiness to expand cooperation with Uganda across all sectors of mutual interest, including technical and economic fields. Minister Jeje Odongo described Dr. Araghchi’s participation in the Kampala summit as valuable and voiced his hope that the Non-Aligned Movement would play an increasingly stronger role in international developments and the promotion of the rule of law. As a concrete step toward enhancing bilateral economic relations, the two ministers agreed to hold the first session of the Iran-Uganda Joint Economic Commission in Tehran in early 2026. This commission is intended to serve as a platform to further invigorate trade ties and finalize cooperation agreements between the two nations.
